Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the change in the number of weekly hours worked in manufacturing industry since 1989; and what has been the impact on(a) shareholders, (b) the Exchequer and (c) the living standards of the British people.

Statistics on the weekly hours of manual workers in the manufacturing sector are published each month in theEmployment Gazette, table 1.12. Manufacturing productivity performance has been exceptionally good in recent years, and this sector is well placed to continue contributing to sustained economic recovery.
