HC Deb 16 March 1994 vol 239 c734W
Mr. Roy Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many miles of motorway are currently(a) open, (b) under construction and (c) planned in Scotland either (i) as new motorway or (ii) as existing motorway being widened.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

In Scotland there are 159 miles of trunk road motorway and a further 15 miles on non-trunk motorway, responsibility for which lies with local authorities.

Twenty-two miles of new motorway is currently under construction, with a further 58 miles of new motorway planned.

Much of the motorway network constructed in the 1960s and 1970s is reaching the end of its structural life and requires major maintenance or reconstruction. Some of this work may involve widening.
