1 Following the introduction of the "Intrastat" system for collecting data on trade with our EC partners, the figure for Intra EC trade involves some estimation of unrecorded imports. It also includes an estimated proportion of imports routed to the United Kingdom via other EC countries.

Mr. Redmond

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what was the value of coal imported in 1993.

Mr. Eggar

The value of coal imported in 1993 is estimated as £687 million this includes types of coal which are not mined in the United Kingdom.

Following the introduction of the "Intrastat" system for collecting data on trade with our EC partners, this value involves some estimation of unrecorded imports. It may, therefore, be subject to greater subsequent revision than figures collected on the previous basis.
