To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Derbyshire, North-East (Mr. Barnes) of 7 March,Official Report, column 45, if he will set out the research and monitoring programmes on nuclear waste in Cumbria conducted by Government Departments, to which he makes reference.

Government intend that these options, which are backed by formal exchanges of letters with the Governments of THORP customer countries, will be exercised. The Government have not yet reached a decision on BNFL's proposals for waste substitution.
