Mr. Riddick

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will outline the number of people currently provided with vehicles under the motability scheme, the number of new people coming on to the scheme each year, the current annual cost of the scheme and the estimated annual profit to the motor industry from the scheme.

Mr. Scott

As at 31 December 1993, 178,317 vehicles were being provided under the motability scheme. The number of vehicles provided under the scheme each year since 1983, the first year for which records are available, are in the table. Motability's annual administration cost during the last full accounting year, 1992–93, was £1.8 million. Details of estimated annual profit to the motor industry as a result of the scheme are not available.
