HL Deb 10 March 1994 vol 552 cc21-2WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether Ministers in the Department of Health will examine alternative research relating to passive smoking which challenges the findings and methods of those authorities so far relied on and cited; and in particular, whether those Ministers will examine a recent work by John C. Liuk, Senior Associate of the

Niagara Institute, entitled Pandora's Box: The Dangers of Politically Corrupted Science for Democratic Public Policy, a copy of which has been placed in the Library of the House.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Cumberlege)

Ministers will continue to look carefully at all research in this important area.

In reaching the conclusions contained in its Fourth Report (1988), a copy of which is available in the Library, the Independent Scientific Committee on Smoking and Health took careful note of all relevant published work. The newly formed Scientific Committee on Smoking and Health will be asked to examine recent work in this field, including the publication referred to by the noble Lord.
