§ Mr. Ron Davies
To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of three and four-year-olds in Wales have nursery education provided for them(a) now and (b) in 1979.

§ Mr. Redwood
The percentage of three and four-year-olds¹ in Wales who were in nursery education provided for them in maintained schools in 1993 and 1979 are as follows:

January 1993 68.5

January 1979 66.7

¹ Ages as at 31 December—estimated.

Others attend some other form of pre-school education or play group, meaning that most Welsh three to five-year-olds spend time with other children away from home.
