Mr. Callaghan

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest official figures for the numbers of unemployed; and what the corresponding figures were for 1979.

Miss Widdecombe

On the consistent seasonally adjusted basis, claimant unemployment in the United Kingdom stood at 2,787,600 in January 1994 and 1,100,100 in January 1979.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what are the latest unemployment figures for the North West.

Miss Widdecombe

In the North West region, seasonally adjusted claimant unemployment stood at 308,100 or 10.3 per cent. of the work force in January 1994. This is a fall of 26,400 compared with a year ago.
