HL Deb 08 March 1994 vol 552 c99WA
Lord Tebbit

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether it is in the public interest that no penalties should be imposed against European Union steel producers which have, during the past three years, been in receipt of state subsidy.

Viscount Goschen

The Government have consistently drawn the Commission's attention to apparent infringements of the ECSC Treaty and have urged rigorous application of ECSC state aid rules. The UK industry accepted that an agreement which secured an undertaking immediately to cease unauthorised subsidies, even though this meant no action being taken in respect of earlier aids to the companies concerned, was preferable to the protracted and uncertain outcome of seeking legal remedies under the provisions of the Treaty.
