To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the attempts made to resolve the technical problems that have arisen with the Samanalawena dam in Sri Lanka.

[holding answer 3 March 1994]: We responded to the technical problems by funding an international panel of experts to consider the best way to resolve the leakage on the right bank to the dam. They endorsed the procedure of sealing the floor of the reservoir with clay without draining out the water. We will consider offering further technical assistance for the remedial works when project partners have decided how they wish to proceed.
