The Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your recent Question about how many prisoners were held in police cells during each month from January 1993 to January 1994 and during February 1994 to the latest available date.It is not possible to give a breakdown by number of those prisoners held in police custody, as some may be retained in police custody for more than one night. However, the number of prisoner nights being charged to the Prison Service are as follows:
