§ Mr. BowisHospital and community health service spending on non-acute services for elderly people between 1980–81 and 1990–91 increased by 21 per cent. in real terms, as measured by the gross domestic product deflator. The costs of future service provision will depend on a number of complex factors including social and demographic change, advances in medical technology and care skills, and the success of our long-term strategy for health promotion and sickness prevention in later life.
