HC Deb 04 March 1994 vol 238 c909W
Mr. Morgan

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what information he has in relation to the incidence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease as regards(a) suspected cases and (b) officially notified cases in Wales in the past two years; how many suspected cases notified informally to his Department are undergoing tests for the disease at present; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Redwood

Since May 1990 details of suspected cases of Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease in the United Kingdom have been notified to the national CJD surveillance unit in Edinburgh. Suspected cases are classified as definite, probable, possible and other. Separate Welsh data on "other" cases is not easily identifiable. During the period 1 May 1991 and 30 April 1993 there were eight definite, two probable and one possible case of CJD from Wales.

The Department is aware of one patient in Wales who is currently undergoing tests. CJD cannot be confirmed in this case at this stage.
