HC Deb 04 March 1994 vol 238 c24W
Mr. Rowe

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage how many buildings are classified by his Department in categories(a) I, (b) II and (c) III; how many in each category fulfil no present function; and how many are falling down.

Mr. Brooke

The total number of list entries recorded by my Department in December 1993 and the number of buildings estimated to be at risk in the 1992 English Heritage sample survey of buildings at risk are as follows:

Total list entries Listed buildings at risk
List grade I* 6,000 700
List grade II 18,000 1,700
List grade III 419,000 34,000

Figures for the number of vacant properties by list grade are not available. However, based on a sample of 25 per cent. of the listed buildings stock, English Heritage estimates that approximately 28,000 of those listed buildings which can be occupied are vacant at present.
