§ Lord Mason of Barnsleyasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they will recommend the installation of indoor reception aerials, in the light of the adverse impact on the environment of unsightly exterior television aerials and satellite dishes on houses, hotels and other buildings, and whether they will prepare guidance notes on this subject for issue to the public.
§ The Earl of ArranOwners are responsible for the siting of television aerials and satellite dishes on their property. In the interests of protecting the environment and local amenity, I would certainly encourage the use of indoor aerials where this gives satisfactory reception.
Satellite dishes generally have to be mounted outdoors in order to receive direct line-of-sight signals. The Department of the Environment publishes a booklet, A Householder's Planning Guide for the Installation of Satellite Television Dishes, which advises on the sympathetic external siting of antennae and the planning controls which apply. A copy of this publication has been placed in the Library.
