HL Deb 02 March 1994 vol 552 c77WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have had recent discussions with Russia on the subject of the Republic of Moldova and, if so, with what result.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We have regular discussions with the Russian government about Moldova. They are aware of our position that there should be an early, orderly and complete withdrawal of the Russian 14th Army from Moldova without linkage to other issues. We have also called on the Russian government to use their influence with the TransDniestrians to urge them to work for a settlement to the dispute over the status of TransDniestria.

Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about the future of the Russian 14th Army in Moldova; and whether they expect it to be withdrawn (as was provisionally agreed), demobilised or transferred to local control.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The Russian government have committed themselves to the withdrawal of the 14th Army from Moldova, but have said that withdrawal should be synchronised with a settlement to the dispute over the status of TransDniestria. We support fully the Moldovan government's wish for an early, orderly and complete withdrawal without: linkage to other issues.
