§ Dr. MawhinneyThe main agency through which the Government support biomedical and clinical research is the Medical Research Council, MRC, which receives its grant in aid from the office of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In 1992–93, the latest year for which figures are available, the MRC spent £318,000 on research directly into ovarian cancer. This figure would rise considerably if a proportion of the council's spend on metabolism, molecular structure, genes and chromosomes, the immune system and other areas of basic medical research, that may yield results relevant to cancer, were included.
