HL Deb 30 June 1994 vol 556 c54WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's; Government:

Whether they approve of the plan proposed by Commissioner Karl Van Miert to give "golden handshakes" to senior Commission officials at a cost of £12.3 million per year.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

The Commission is considering proposals on how to absorb staff from the new member states after enlargement. One option is to include a voluntary redundancy scheme for some existing staff. But no decisions have yet been made. The Commission will present its proposals to the Council in due course.
