Sir Michael Grylls

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what is the current balance of trade between the United Kingdom and Nigeria; what were the comparable figures for each of the previous three years; and what particular steps he intends to take to encourage further improvements in United Kingdom trade with Nigeria.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer27 June 1994]: In 1993, the United Kingdom had a trade surplus with Nigeria worth £522 million. In 1991 and 1992, the trade surplus with Nigeria was worth £295 million and £455 million respectively.

As one of our major markets, Nigeria receives particular attention from my department in the key sectors of oil and gas, power generation and distribution, telecommunications, agriculture/water resources, ports management, mining equipment, railway equipment and pharmaceuticals.
