To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list by county the current estimate of the red squirrel population; what were the figures(a) five years and (b) 10 years ago; and if he will make a statement.

No estimate of the red squirrel population of Northern Ireland has been made. I counted five when I visited Belvoir forest park on 23 March. Support for the population of red squirrels includes full protection under the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985.
