HL Deb 15 June 1994 vol 555 cc95-6WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are supporting the humanitarian agreement concerning southern Sudan, signed in Nairobi under the auspices of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Drought and Development on 17th May 1994; what supplies and services they will be providing; whether the substantive peace talks have been postponed until July; and whether they welcome the draft declaration of principles dated 20th May 1994.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey): We support the agreement, which is intended to facilitate delivery of humanitarian supplies to southern Sudan. It remains to be seen however whether it will be implemented. We are continuing to supply humanitarian food and non-food supplies. We hope that progress will be made by the parties when they discuss the draft declaration of principles at their next round of talks scheduled for mid-July.
