To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what was the total public expenditure on road maintenance in England for each of the last five years; and if he will make a statement.

The figures are:

£21,600,000. This results from the transfer of responsibility for the international passenger survey to the Central Statistical Office from the 1 April 1994.

In addition, the Department of National Heritage gross running costs limit will be reduced by £3,080,000 from £31,008,000 to £27,928,000.
