HL Deb 15 June 1994 vol 555 cc99-100WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What evidence has been submitted to HM Customs and Excise by the Laogai Research Foundation of the importation of chain hoists manufactured by forced labour in the Chinese Laogai by Felco of Coventry, and whether proceedings will be brought against the company by HM Customs and Excise under the Foreign Prison Made Goods Act 1897.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Employment (Lord Henley)

HM Customs and Excise have recently received information alleging that goods manufactured in Chinese prison labour camps have been imported into the UK. This information is being carefully analysed. It would be inappropriate to provide further details or to anticipate any action which may be taken.
