To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average time spent on remand by(a) males and (b) females remanded into custody in 1993.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from D. Lewis to Ms Joan Ruddock, dated 14 June 1994: The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question asking what was the average time spent on remand by (a) males and (b) females remanded into custody in 1993. The available information is estimated from the figures for the population and receptions of untried prisoners in 1993. For males the average time served as an untried prisoner was estimated as 55 days and for females 39 days.
