HL Deb 06 June 1994 vol 555 c63WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their view of the document The Attack on Parliament published by the Committee for Democracy and Civil Liberties in Russia.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

As we made clear at the time, we believe President Yeltsin had exhausted all possible means to resolve the constitutional crisis in Russia before agreeing to suspend the Supreme Soviet last autumn and calling for fresh elections. In so doing he ensured the Russian people were able to exercise their democratic choice in free and fair parliamentary elections and in a referendum on a new constitution. This was the democratic way forward.
