HL Deb 22 July 1994 vol 557 c58WA
Lord Clinton-Davis

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their response to the findings of Avon and Somerset police that on 9th July, of 236 coaches, buses and mini-buses stopped between Bristol and Exeter, half were defective and three were so dangerous that they were immediately ordered of the road.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Department of Transport (Viscount Goschen)

Although defects were found on half the vehicles stopped, most were of a minor nature, and only 1 per cent. of vehicles checked had serious defects. We shall continue to run such checks, as they are one of the most important methods we have for encouraging people to look after their vehicles properly during the year.
