HL Deb 20 July 1994 vol 557 c32WA
Baroness Cox

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they will take to persuade Azerbaijan to desist from its impending military offensive against the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh.

Baroness Chalker Of Wallasey

The current ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict seems to be holding. We fully support the statement by the Chairman of the CSCE Minsk Group issued on 8 July calling on all parties to respect the ceasefire in order to allow mediation efforts to continue.

Baroness Cox

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will seek from Azerbaijan clarification of reports that Azeri forces are using NATO weapons in the conflict against the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We have seen no evidence to suggest that weapons originating in NATO member states are being used in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. We do not therefore intend to seek clarification from the Azerbaijani authorities on this issue.

Since February 1992 a voluntary CSCE embargo has been in place on the supply of military equipment to the parties in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. We would expect our NATO allies to adhere to this.
