To ask the President of the Board' of Trade what was the balance of trade in manufactured goods(a) in 1979 and (b) in the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Needham

In 1979, the United Kingdom had a surplus of £2.7 billion—1.4 per cent. of GDP—in manufactured trade. In 1993, there was a deficit of £8.3 billion—1.3 per cent. of GDP.
