HL Deb 18 July 1994 vol 557 c1WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the current information concerning genocide and the enslavement of women and children in the Nuba Mountains and in southern Sudan; and whether they will propose oil and arms sanctions against the Sudan, until the Government of that country stops imposing purely military solutions.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We are profoundly concerned that human rights abuses and the civil war are continuing, with reports of slavery as documented by the UN Special Rapporteur, Dr. Biro. The EU instituted an arms embargo on Sudan in March. We abhor the continuing bloodshed.
