HL Deb 13 July 1994 vol 556 c103WA
Baroness Jay of Paddington

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why there are differences between figures published by the Department of Health and figures produced by Professor Brian Jarman concerning healthcare in London; and in particular why Professor Jarman concludes that London has 2.7 acute beds per 1,000 head of resident population while the department's figure is 3.9; why the department states that London receives 20 per cent. of NHS funding for 15 per cent. of the population, whereas Professor Jarman states that spending in London is, after discounting extra costs, proportional to the population; and, in each case, which is the correct figure.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Cumberlege)

The two sets of calculations have been prepared on separate bases and are not directly comparable.
