HC Deb 13 July 1994 vol 246 c599W
Mr. Burns

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of staff in post in central Government Departments at 1 April.

Mr. Portillo

On 1 April 1994 there were 533,350 permanent staff in post in central Government, which is a new post-war low. This is a decrease of nearly 20,900 in the last year.

Of the total staff in post 487,435 were non-industrials and 45,915 were classified as being in industrial work.

A summary showing staff in post by Department has been placed in the Libraries of the House.
