§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonResults from the September 1993 schools census show that there were 9,981 pupils taking Spanish in 167 education authority secondary schools in Scotland. No pupils took Portuguese. At September 1992, the latest year for which information is available, there were 274 teachers teaching Spanish in education authority secondary schools; teachers teaching Portuguese are not separately identified in the school census.
At September 1993, 571 pupils in 10 education authority primary schools had contact with a subject specialist teacher in Spanish. No primary pupils had contact with a subject specialist in Portuguese. No information is held centrally on the numbers of teachers involved in teaching Spanish or Portuguese in primary schools.
