To ask the Secretary of State for Education what steps he is taking to prevent local education authorities from discriminating against independent and grant-maintained schools.

§ Mr. Forth
Section 129 of the 1993 Education Act provides that local education authorities, in performing592W their duties and exercising their powers, must treat pupils at grant-maintained schools no less favourably than pupils at schools maintained by a local education authority. The Department will continue to investigate allegations of discrimination against GM schools. Pupils at independent schools are not covered by equivalent statutory protection.
