HL Deb 11 July 1994 vol 556 cc93-4WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether their policy of giving preference to citizens of the European Union conflicts with any of their international obligations.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Earl Ferrers)

European Economic Area nationals, including citizens of the European Union, are free to work and seek employment in the United Kingdom on the same basis as British citizens. They can reside in the United Kingdom in any other capacity, provided that they are self-supporting financially, in accordance with our obligations under the Treaty of Rome and the European Economic Area Agreement.
