HL Deb 07 July 1994 vol 556 c86WA
The Earl of Selkirk

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why they have refused to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Caen on 9th July 1994 and join the Canadian troops who have undertaken to take part.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Viscount Cranborne)

We cannot commemorate officially the 50th anniversary of the liberation of all the towns and cities which will be holding commemorations in the months ahead. However, we will ensure that there is adequate British military representation at the Caen ceremonies on 9th July through visiting Navy and Army detachments.
