§ Ms PrimaroloTo ask the Secretary of State for health if she will make a statement on the progress of the breast self-examination campaign.
§ Mr. SackvilleThe Chief Medical Officer wrote to all doctors in England in 1991 to provide advice on ways in which women could be involved in the early detection of breast abnormalities. In addition, a leaflet entitled "Be Breast Aware", copies of which will be placed in the Library, has been produced by the national health service breast screening programme, which makes it clear to women what changes should be discussed with their doctor. The leaflet has been translated into a number of languages and has received widespread support. The Department has also recently helped fund a breast awareness video—"Being Breast Aware is for Life", produced by the charity, Womens Nationwide Cancer Control Campaign.
