asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many awards were given, for the last convenient period for which records are available, by;

  1. (i) The Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards for England: and
  2. (ii) The Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards (Scottish Sub-Committee); how many awards were given at each level of distinction; and what was the breakdown of awards by medical specialty and by region.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Cumberlege)

All awards are made by the Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards taking account of recommendations made by Regional C Awards Committees and Higher Awards Committees in respect of consultants in England and Wales and by the Scottish sub-committee in respect of consultants in Scotland.

A total of 6,226 consultants in England and Wales and 879 consultants in Scotland received distinction award payments in 1993–94. The further information requested is set out in the tables.

Members of the Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards are appointed by the Minister for Health on behalf of the Secretary of State for Health and the Secretaries of State for Scotland and Wales. Members of the Scottish Sub.Committee of the Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards are appointed by the Minister of State for Scotland on behalf of the Secretary of State for Health and the Secretaries of State for Scotland and Wales.
