HC Deb 04 July 1994 vol 246 c24W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the basis for and outcome of the recent Oscar IV emergency planning exercise held at Sellafield.

Mr. Eggar

I have been asked to reply.

Exercise Oscar IV was the level III—national—civil nuclear emergency exercise for 1993. It was held in November and formed part of an on-going programme to demonstrate the off-site emergency arrangements at each civil nuclear site in the United Kingdom every three years.

The exercise was a successful demonstration of the off-site emergency planning arrangements for BNFL's Sellafield plant, fulfilling the licensing criteria set by the Health and Safety Executive's nuclear installations inspectorate.
