HC Deb 04 July 1994 vol 246 c12W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what action he has taken against the auditing firm and partners criticised in the inspectors' reports on Alexander Howden; and what has been the outcome.

Mr. Neil Hamilton

A copy of the inspectors' report into the affairs of Alexander Howden Holdings plc—formerly Alexander Howden Group plc—was passed to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in August 1990. The matter was then referred to the joint disciplinary scheme. In December 1992, a joint disciplinary scheme committee of inquiry, noting that the events which were the subject of the inquiry took place prior to 1982, found that no criticism was made out concerning the conduct, efficiency or competence of two members and, in respect of the others under inquiry, decided that it would not now be able to reach a finding on their conduct, efficiency or competence.
