HL Deb 31 January 1994 vol 551 c86WA
The Earl of Clanwilliam

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many citizens are in receipt of state retirement pension; and

How many citizens in receipt of state retirement pension have no other taxable income; and

Whether they have figures available to indicate how many citizens in receipt of the state retirement pension have a taxable income in excess of £10,000 per annum.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Social Security (Viscount Astor)

The information is not available in the form requested.

At 31 March 1993, the latest date for which figures are available, approximately 10 million people1 were in receipt of state retirement pension.

In 1991–92, the latest year for which figures are available, it is estimated2 that 770,000 people over state pension age had taxable incomes3 in excess of £10,000.

Reliable estimates are not available of the number of people whose only source of taxable income is retirement pension.
