To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the annual cost to the NHS of the medical service provided to those patients addicted to prescribed drugs.

Mr. Bowis

This information is not available centrally in the form requested. However, since 1986–87 top sliced funds have been made available to health authorities for the development of drug misuse services, including services for people addicted to prescribed drugs. This allocation, which totals over £24 million in 1993–94 represents a minimum that health authorities will spend on drug misuse services.
