HC Deb 28 January 1994 vol 236 c444W
Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of Slate for the Environment what is the annual cost to public funds of the activities of the Audit Commission and the regulatory bodies, in relation to the water industry.

Mr. Atkins

The Audit Commission has no responsibilities in connection with the water industry, and the costs of the Office of Water Services are fully recoverable from licence fees. Costs of other water industry regulators, attributable to public funds, for 1992–93, were £56–71 million distributed as follows:

  • Drinking water inspectorate £1.35 million.
  • National Rivers Authority £55 million.
  • Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution £360,000.
