To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement about the effect of Government spending plans on the services provided by his Department.

Mr. Lang

Within the total available for public expenditure in Scotland, I shall be imposing strict limits on what is spent directly on staff and the other costs of running the Scottish Office. All areas will be required to demonstrate greater efficiency in delivering services.
