HC Deb 25 January 1994 vol 236 cc161-2W
Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received regarding clamping companies; whether he proposes to have consultations on the subject of clamping companies; if he will introduce legislation or guidelines to control clamping companies; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

During the consultation exercise carried out last year concerning wheel clamping on private land, the Government received a number of different views, including some from the companies themselves and a representative association, about the activities of clamping companies and about ways of reducing concerns that exist about those activities.

In considering what, if any, action it may be appropriate to take, the Government's aim continues to be to ensure that any measure introduced to prevent or deter irresponsible and heavy-handed wheel clamping on private land does not prevent sensible measures being taken to control genuine parking problems.
