To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what percentage of(a) council tenants, (b) housing association tenants, (c) private tenants and (d) owner occupiers were in receipt of housing benefit for each of the London boroughs at the latest available date.

Mr. Burt

The percentages of local authority tenants, housing association tenants and other private tenants in receipt of housing benefit in London, in November 1992, the latest date for which figures are available, were approximately 60 per cent., 50 per cent. and 50 per cent. respectively. Information for individual local authorities and owner-occupiers is not available.

Notes:

(i) Owner-occupiers, in England and Wales have not been eligible for Housing Benefit—(rate rebates)—since April 1990 when community charge benefit was introduced.
