To ask the Secretary of State for Education what was the annual cost of administering the Higher Education Funding Council for England for every year of its existence; and what is the cost to the HEFCE of the quality assessment process.

The HEFCE was set up during the financial year 1992–93 while the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council and Universities Funding Council were still in existence. The cost of setting up and administering the HEFCE for that period was £500,000. Now in its first operational year, the cost of administering the HEFCE is £10.1 million. The cost of the HEFCE of quality assessment this year is £2 million.
