HL Deb 25 January 1994 vol 551 cc69-70WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What recent reports they have received from the British Embassy in Zagreb; and what evidence they have of military action by Croatia with a view to dismembering Bosnia and acquiring territory there by force.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

We receive regular reports from our Embassy in Zagreb on a range of subjects, including the conflict in Bosnia. Croatia has been warned about the consequences of direct military intervention in Bosnia.

Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their policy towards the Government of Croatia; and how they propose that the interests of Moslem refugees in Croatia should be safeguarded.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey: We urge the Government of Croatia to contribute towards an early negotiated settlement to the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. We recognise the efforts of Croatia in taking refugees from Bosnia, and the burden this involves. We continue strongly to support the efforts of UNHCR on behalf of refugees in Croatia and throughout the former Yugoslavia. We announced on 21 January a further £5 million to support UNHCR operations in the former Yugoslavia.

Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their latest information from the UNPROFOR areas in Croatia.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The latest reports indicate that the situation in the UN protected areas in Croatia is relatively quiet. The European Union is supporting efforts to broker a ceasefire and confidence-building measures between the parties as a first step to an overall solution.
