To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list job losses in each year since 1973 in the Houghton and Washington constituency and give the level of youth unemployment in the same years.

The information is not available in the form requested. Comparable employment information for parliamentary constituencies is available only form the periodic censuses of employment, held between 1984 and 1991. This can be used to estimate the net change in the number of employees in employment.

Claimant unemployment statistics for local areas are available from July 1983. Statistics for particular age bands are available quarterly for the months of January, April, July and October.

Employment and unemployment statistics for parliamentary constituencies can be obtained from the NOMIS database available in the Library.
