HC Deb 20 January 1994 vol 235 c794W
Mr. Hicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what criteria have to be met for an A class trunk road to be designated as an A(M) road; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Key

There is provision at section 16(5)(b) of the Highways Act 1980 for an existing all-purpose trunk road to be designated a motorway.

To come up to full motorway standard the road would need to meet the physical requirements for motorways. Designation as a motorway would also mean that certain classes of traffic would be prevented from using the road.
