§ Mr. RedmondTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the procedure for the appointment of lords lieutenant in(a) South Yorkshire, (b) West Yorkshire, (c) Essex and (d) London; if he will give the name in each case, home residence, occupation, and date of appointment of the current (i) lord lieutenant, (ii) vice lord lieutenant and (iii) each deputy lord lieutenant; and how nominations can be made for these positions.
§ Mr. Charles WardleLords lieutenant in England and Wales are appointed by the Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
Nominations of candidates for lords lieutenant can, when a vacancy occurs, be made to the relevant clerk to the lieutenancy, the outgoing lord lieutenant or the Prime Minister's secretary of appointments. For vice lords lieutenant, recommendations can be made to the clerk to the lieutenancy or the lord lieutenant. The appointment of deputy lieutenants is a matter for the lord lieutenant, subject to the non-disapprobation of the Queen.
A list of the names of serving lords lieutenant, vice lords lieutenant and deputy lieutentants in south Yorkshire, west Yorkshire, Essex and London together with, where available, dates of appointment, is being placed in the Library of the House. Deputy lieutenants are required by section 133(2)(a) of the Reserve Forces Act 1980 to have a place of residence in, or within seven miles of the boundary of, the county or area. Lords lieutenant and vice lords lieutenant would generally be expected to comply with these residential requirements. Details of the occupation of the lords lieutenant, vice lords lieutenant and deputy lieutenants could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
